How to keep your motivation to the fullest so as not to abandon your workouts?
How many times has it happened to you that you start a new exercise routine and just when the day arrives and it's time to train you say to yourself, why am I going to go today if I feel so comfortable here and I'm so tired? Better to leave it for tomorrow.
Today I want to talk to you about how to keep your motivation high so you don't give up on your workouts.
Make the decision
The first thing is to make the decision: I want to do exercises and start training. Your goal has to be well defined and clear in your mind.
Do not leave for tomorrow what you can do today.
How many times do we tell ourselves “I'll start training on Monday” or “I'll start my diet on Monday” and when Monday arrives we were not prepared or, due to things in life, “we forget”…
The time to start is NOW, our brain does not understand the future and if we always say tomorrow, next week, one of these days I will start... our brain keeps looking at the future and it will cost us much more to take action... because tomorrow is tomorrow and Tomorrow comes tomorrow and tomorrow never comes... So the best thing is to make the decision and immediately start moving.
Find your why
This question is crucial because it goes directly to your very intimate and personal motivation... Ask yourself at least 3 times: What am I going to train for? And write the first thing that comes to mind.
And here I want to tell you Rosa's story...
A patient who one day came to my office to ask me for help, because she couldn't find the necessary motivation to stay consistent with her workouts, and when I asked Rosa why she wanted to train, her first response was: to make my partner like me more. However, as a coach I knew that there was something more behind this answer... so I continued my unpleasant questions: and why does Rosa want her partner to like her more? And Rosa answered me: so that she pays more attention to me... and so I went back, continued and asked again: and why does Rosa want her partner to pay more attention to her? The answer was: to feel loved.
At this point I knew that we were really getting closer to the true motivation that moved Rosa to decide to train and seek a healthier lifestyle, so I asked her again:
And why does Rosa want to feel loved? And this time Rosa, shyly and with blushing cheeks, answered: TO FEEL HAPPY and then her eyes lit up...
I feel that we had arrived at that moment, to what is really a personal and very intimate motivation... because it is not about pleasing a third party (which is very difficult, it makes one stay motivated), what really motivates us is which means something important to ourselves… and what is more important than happiness.
From then on we continued with our coaching session and everything flowed wonderfully.
Visualize yourself
After finding your why, visualize yourself as if you have already achieved your goal. In Rosa's case: I asked her to imagine herself happy doing exercises, feeling good about her body, feeling more attractive and happy with her results, which will also surely improve her health.
Choose a discipline that you like
I have heard in my office and on the street many people who join the gym as if it were an obligation and you hear them continually say every day: “I just hate the gym”, I don't like this, what a hassle, how lazy…
And I wonder how come they hate the gym and are there? And how are they going to feel good if they are complaining all the time from the moment they leave the house until they finish the exercise.
If this is your case, perhaps you repeat those phrases like a parrot because you had a bad experience in the past, or because you have not found your true motivation, or simply because you have not allowed yourself to explore the different exercise modalities that exist to find one that suits you. you really like it and it adapts to your personality and lifestyle.
So I invite you from today to try different exercise modalities and then come and tell me about your experience here:
- Yoga
- Pilates
- TRX
- Rebolaxe
- Dumbbells
- Cardiovascular exercise such as walking, swimming, jogging, climbing the mountains
- Fitwall
- Functional exercises
- Dance around the house with the music you like
And if you still can't find the exercise that best suits you or you don't have the financial resources to pay for a gym or personal trainer, we invite you to read this article on our blog.
I'm sure that if you dare to try this variety of exercise routines, some will seem at least interesting or doable... and when you start to see the results, you'll get a taste for it, in short, the important thing is to keep moving.
